District Conference 7020 St. Thomas, April 14-16, 2011

The district 7020 conference held in St. Thomas was again a great conference with excellent guest speakers. Many clubs and individual rotarians were showered with awards for their hard work and Service Above Self during the past year. Our Own District Governor got awarded The Person Of The Year Award and we all got the pleasure to meet our District Governor Elect Guy Theodore. ROTARY NEGRIL CHRISTMAS TREAT FOR ST.ATNHONY SOUP KITCHEN

Members of the Rotary Club of Negril gathered to assemble Christmas food bags and packages of toys for children. The Christmas treats were distributed to over 50 families on 23 December at the luncheon gathering at St. Anthony’s Soup Kitchen.

Thanks to the Franciscan Friars, local and international donors, 130 hungry people receive hot meals three days a week.

The kitchen is located near the car/taxi park and serves hot meals from 12-1:30 pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday of each week.

International Spaying & Neuter Network organizes Spay/Neuter Clinic with Rotary Negril

October 24, 2010 Negril, Rotarians from Rotary Club of Negril had a busy weekend helping the professional vets from the International Spaying and Neuter Network, who volunteered their services for free, with the organized Spay and Neuter Clinic in Negril. The first day a total of 63 dogs and cats were helped at the Community Centre in Negril. People could bring in their pets at no charge. Captured Stray dogs & cats were also accepted. Outside the Community Centre a classroom was created where children were told not to be afraid of dogs, not to stone or kick them and how they can care for them.

Interclub Assembly Mandeville

September 25th and 26th, all Rotary Clubs of Jamaica met in Mandeville

with our District Governor Diana White and all the Assistant Governors.

The Clubs gave an overview of all the "Service Above Self" extended to their communities and new ideas were exchanged. It was a weekend full of great fellowship!

Negril Rotarians clean up coastal area in Negril

Saturday September 25, 2010 Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Negril participated in International Coastal Clean up Day and cleaned the stretch of beach between Sunshine Village shopping mall and The Negril Post Office. They spend a day picking up everything from cigarette butts and food wrappers to exchanged JPSCO electricity cables.

Over 10 garbage bags were filled.

RCM Sunrise Installs new Rotarians

RCM Sunrise has added to the fold with the installation of two (2) new members this August 2010.
The new members though new to RCM Sunrise are not new to rotary as they both had previously been members of other clubs.

ST. ANTHONY'S SOUP KITCHEN RECEIVES DONATION FROM ROTARY CLUB OF NEGRIL

To show their support for this most needed project and as contribution to our local community,
The Rotary Club of Negril donated JA$ 100,000 to be used to provide shade, tables and chairs for the
St. Anthony Soup Kitchen, during their business meeting held Thursday July 15th 2010.

Father Jim from The Mary Gate of Heaven Catholic Church in Negril was very excited about the 3 month old soup kitchen as well as having Negril Rotary being the first community group to show interest in assisting with this important programme. The kitchen is located near the car/taxi park and serves hot meals from 12-1:30 pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday of each week. Approximately 130 meals are served which include 24 children. The paid staff (two cooks) work along with volunteers to feed any hungry persons that presents themselves.

The children who don't have the funds to be in school, begin arriving already at 9 am...and the cooks started to give them a little breakfast of Milo and toast. Rotarian Jeanne along with Peace Corp volunteers are now in the hot sun on makeshift benches trying to get these kids who are often illiterate and undisciplined to receive more than the food by having edutainment and using the lunch time to teach them basic reading, values, positive behaviour and attitudes.

Father Jim said: " This gift is wonderful and we are thrilled to receive it" and wished Rotary every blessing!

KIRLEWS OF NEGRIL HARDWARE & HABERDASHERY HONOURED BY ROTARY CLUB OF NEGRIL

Negril, Jamaica (30 July 2010) –

Members of the Rotary Club of Negril gathered to honour Mr. and Mrs. Desmond (Roy) Kirlew of Negril Hardware & Haberdashery yesterday. 

President Giovanna Allella presented a plaque that read:  In Honour and Appreciation to Mrs. & Mrs. Desmond (Roy) Kirlew for Continuous Major Support and Contribution to the Rotary Club of Negril. 

“The Kirlews have supported our Club in all endeavors of community support during my two years leading our members and projects,” added Sabine Bolenius Brown, Past President.  “These projects include fencing of Happy Hearts, Rocky Hill and West End Basic Schools; a bus shelter near Rhodes Hall High School and classroom and kitchen enhancements at the Theodora Project School.”

NEW PRESIDENT AND OFFICERS MANAGE THE SAILS

Sunday July 11, 2010  The Rotary Club of Negril installed their New President and Board for the year 2010 -2011during their traditional cruise on board "The Wildthing" 

Many Rotarians were recognized for their hard work in 2010 by Past President Sabine Brown and president Giovanna gave a brief overview of the goals for 2011. She adjourned the meeting with saying as follows" The Rotary Club of Negril will laugh a little, cry a little, dance a little, and stumble a little, In 2010 -2011 We will manage the sails in both stormy and calm waters to keep this ship on track. We will go through high and low tides but will also watch many magnificent sunrise and sunsets. And I hope that as we embark back onto shore, we can lift our head a little higher, knowing we've made the world a little better"

The Rotary Club of Montego Bay Sunrise had its Installation Dinner and Awards Ceremony on June 26th 2010. The newly opened Satori Resort & Spa provided an amazing backdrop that rain had earlier threatened to ruin.

Set on the Pool deck over looking the beautiful Caribbean Sea the evening was another highlight of the outgoing Executives tenure at the club's helm.

Special guest speaker Charmaine Delisser provided an insightful talk on internet fraud, phishing and it's effects. With numerous awards and presentations dotting the evenings happenings it was with great enthusiasm and excitement when outgoing Charter President Manoj Ramchandani ended his presentation on the club's charter year activities.

This cleared the way for the Spotlight of the evening as Rtn. David Tavares was installed as the new President of Rotary Club of Montego Bay Sunrise. As David had his new Executives and Board installed and pinned the evening wound down with the new Sergeant-At-Arms Rtn. Allen Satterlee providing comic relief and building the coffers for the new rotary year.

Another highlight of the evening came as a welcomed surprise to everyone as DGSR Haresh Ramchandani who has been instrumental in providing guidance and support to the club during it's charter year was
presented with a Honorary Club Member award. This capped not only a wonderful evening but brought the curtains on the Club's successful Charter year of activities.

Sunrise visits RCMBE Games night

After a successful year of service above self RCMBE ended the year with a games night social and of course as always RC Montego Bay Sunrise was on hand to share in the evening.

Held at the beautiful Sunset Beach Resort and Spa the evening was well supported and with the variety of games on hand there was no shortage of laughter and smiles .

Even though there was no Red RUM :) the "SUNRISERS" in attendance some how managed to survive on Red wine. :) :)
A well spent evening of fellowship and comradery amongst Rotarians.

Thank you to the Executive body of the RCMBE for a successful year and inviting us to be apart of their many gatherings.

Shaniek Parks- Jamaican Ambassadorial Scholar in Leeds, UK

To further international understanding and goodwill is one reason Shaniek Parks will travel to Leeds in September. She will be doing an MA in International Communications at the University of Leeds, this will allow her to become more informed about the impact of communication on global affairs, people and their reactions towards societal issues. She is intrigued by the area of Communications as a developmental tool and its impact on the ways people analyze and relate to situations.

Shaniek graduated from the University of the West Indies, Mona in 2008. While at UWI, she majored in Media and Communication and minored in International Relations. She was a member of the UWI Honour Roll and the received the JN/CARIMAC Media Award for excellence in Radio Production. She had the opportunity of interning with two influential development organizations namely; the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Office for the Caribbean and the Roving Caregivers Programme in St. Vincent in 2007 and 2008 respectively. These organizations introduced her to a plethora of opportunities for societal development and strengthened her passion of making the world a better place through service.

Volunteerism has always been an important part of Shaniek’s life. This appreciation for volunteerism dates back to her time at the Mount Alvernia High School where students had to complete a quota for community service. She was later given the opportunity to be instrumental in the planning and execution of the Protect. Stop. Seek. Talk (P.S.S.T) Campaign Against Physical Abuse in the inner- city community of Torrington Park, Kingston while attending the UWI. The campaign ran from February-April 2008 and featured various workshops and follow- up sessions culminating in a Blue Ribbon Drive at Crossroads, Kingston.

At present, Shaniek is member of the Rotaract Club of Montego Bay and a member of the United Nations Online Volunteers (UNV). In her capacity as an online volunteer she has assisted with the formulation of proposals for organizations in various parts of the world. However, her focus has been on assisting organizations in Cameroon, Africa namely the Rural Development Corporation (RUDEC) and the Goodness and Mercy Mission.

Shaniek is excited to be representing District 7020 and the Rotary Club of Montego Bay in Leeds. She is honoured to be joining Rotary’s International Family as an Ambassadorial Scholar and will do well in representing Rotary and its values while in the United Kingdom.

Rotary Club of Montego Bay's EarlyAct Clubs featured in The Rotarian magazine!

In only their first year of being, The EarlyAct Clubs of Montego Bay, working with the Rotaractors of Montego Bay and the Rotary Club of Montego Bay, in October of last year raised over JA$200,000 with their Coin Collection Drive. The funds were raised for the Norwood Basic School in Norwood, Montego Bay.

The Rotarian Magazine recognised this as a great achievement for the first project of the EarlyAct Clubs of Montego Bay and featured this success in its April 2010 issue of World Round Up.

Congratulations again to the EarlyActors and Rotaractors on this fundraiser!
